World War 1: Timeline
June 28, 1914, The Austro- Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife are assassinated by, Bosnian Serb nationalist, Gavrilo Princip. Austrian Government suspects Serbia to be responsible for the assassination.
July 28, 1914 WWI begins, When the Serbian government refused to hand over the assassins because the government had nothing to do with the assassination, then the Austria-Hungary government declared war on Serbia. Then leading allies like Germany, France and other European countries join in on the war. August 26, 1914 Russians defeated at the battle of Tannenberg, Germans on the eastern front shatter the Russian’s Second Army and the Germans take over 92,000 Russian prisoners. September 5, 1914 The German invasion of France is stopped in the First battle of the Marne, the reason being that German troops are forced to the north side of the Marne River, which cause the Schlieffen Plan to fail. April 25, 1915 Allies including Australian and New Zealand troops are deployed in Gallipoli and Turkey at Helles and the Anzac Cove. Turkish soldiers protect the peninsula of twisting shorelines, Dardanelle Straits, which is a key international waterway that connects Mediterranean sea to the Black sea. April 1, 1916 French Army flying unit called the Lafayette Escadrille is formed. This unit is mostly composed of thirty-eight American volunteers that are credited with 57 victories. June 24, 1916 The Battle of the Somme begins. German machine gunners take down advancing troops, 40,000 British troops wounded and 20,000 troops are killed, this devastating battle will continue through summer and end in November. The casualty count: 419,000 British, 194,000 French, and 650,000 Germans. April 9, 1917 The Battle of Arras, in this battle there were other countries other than the main two fronts which were Germany and France. The war also involved troops from Britain, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, and Newfoundland. June 25, 1917 The first American troops land in France. These troops in stevedore service were the first American arrivals in France they have been outfitted with old overcoats. November 11, 1918 World War 1 has came to a stop following the signing of an armistice between the allies and the Germans that called for a ceasefire effect. |
